Jarret Reid knows that providing a good example for those that will proceed him is as important to hockey as the game itself. Jarret's success during his hockey career was not limited to on the ice. Jarret gave his all in each faucet of his life, including academics. That is why Jarret was awarded the Scholastic Player of the Year Award, an award given annually to the player who is best able to combine success on the ice with success in school. Jarett did so because he wanted to set an example of excellence for his fellow players, something that in itself grew. When Jarret began, his idea of excellence has somewhat different. When he first began his career in the OHL, he believed that talent bred excellence, and that the individual helped carry the team. It was only later in life that Jarret realized it was entirely the other way around, and that his team helped carry him to greatness. Jarret realized that the relationship between team members was just as important, if not more important than each individual talent. So when asked what makes the heart of a champion beat, Jarret would say that it is comradery and good will that leads a team to victory.
Jarret Reid also knows that not everyone has been as fortune as he has. He also understands that many great talents can be lost simply because someone never taps into their gift. This is why Jarret stays active in programs that help those less fortunate than himself. Jarret actively volunteers and donates to both United Way, a coalition of charities, as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Everyone has their own obstacles to overcome, and Jarret knows that a bit of a helping hand can go a long way, which is why he hopes his contributions to charitable groups will set an example for fellow hockey players and coaches like himself.
